Jen\u017ee v roce 1993 kapela vydala n\u011bco, co nikdo ne\u010dekal, gospelov\u00fd singl nato\u010den\u00fd v betonov\u00e9m sklep\u011b v Madridu.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Album Songs of Faith and Devotion se rodilo b\u011bhem roku 1992 a kapela tehdy pendlovala mezi n\u011bkolika studii. Nahr\u00e1valo se v Madridu, \u010d\u00e1st pr\u00e1ce pokra\u010dovala v hambursk\u00e9m Ch\u00e2teau du Pape a dal\u0161\u00ed materi\u00e1l vznikal tak\u00e9 v lond\u00fdnsk\u00fdch Olympic Studios. Gahan zp\u00edval v n\u00edzk\u00e9m prostoru pod studiem. Betonov\u00e9 st\u011bny, kov, chlad, t\u00e1hl\u00e1 ozv\u011bna. Pozd\u011bji popisoval, \u017ee ho ta m\u00edstnost zvl\u00e1\u0161tn\u011b pohltila; hlas se vracel od st\u011bn tak, a\u017e m\u011bl dojem, \u017ee stoj\u00ed n\u011bkde v katedr\u00e1le. Kdy\u017e potom vy\u0161el zp\u00e1tky nahoru, v re\u017eii se pr\u00fd chv\u00edli nemluvilo. Alan Wilder i zbytek kapely se shodli, \u017ee \u0161lo mo\u017en\u00e1 o nejlep\u0161\u00ed vok\u00e1l, jak\u00fd kdy nazp\u00edval. Z takov\u00e9ho rozpolo\u017een\u00ed najednou vy\u0161el v\u00fdkon, kter\u00fd lid\u00e9 kolem kapely ozna\u010dili za mimo\u0159\u00e1dn\u00fd. Gore do n\u00ed cht\u011bl dostat n\u00e1ladu star\u00fdch gospelov\u00fdch kvartet\u016f, tedy jak\u00fdsi tah, nap\u011bt\u00ed a jednoduchou nal\u00e9havost, kter\u00e1 u podobn\u00fdch nahr\u00e1vek funguje. Kapela proto zkusila pom\u011brn\u011b neobvykl\u00fd postup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">V jedn\u00e9 m\u00edstnosti st\u00e1li v\u0161ichni \u010dty\u0159i \u010dlenov\u00e9 a ka\u017ed\u00fd d\u011blal n\u011bco jin\u00e9ho. Andy Fletcher ml\u00e1til ty\u010d\u00ed do leteck\u00e9ho kufru, Flood s Gahanem tleskali, Wilder hr\u00e1l na buben a Gore sed\u011bl u varhan. Wilder pozd\u011bji \u0159\u00edkal, \u017ee to tehdy nebyl hotov\u00fd z\u00e1klad, sp\u00ed\u0161 hrub\u00fd n\u00e1\u010drt. Do fin\u00e1ln\u00ed verze pak dostal klav\u00edr prohnan\u00fd rozt\u0159esen\u00fdm pitch-shifterem, aby z\u016fstalo gospelov\u00e9 zabarven\u00ed, ale p\u00edse\u0148 nep\u016fsobila jako napodobenina star\u00fdch p\u0159edloh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gore v jednom rozhovoru vysv\u011btloval, \u017ee vok\u00e1ln\u00ed party si nazp\u00edvali sami \u010dlenov\u00e9 kapely ve stylu gospelov\u00e9ho kvarteta. Byly to tedy jen jejich vlastn\u00ed zp\u011bvy poskl\u00e1dan\u00e9 do harmoni\u00ed. Na v\u00fdsledku ho fascinovalo, \u017ee elektronick\u00e1 kapela na okam\u017eik s\u00e1hla po \u00fapln\u011b jin\u00e9m hudebn\u00edm jazyce, a p\u0159esto po\u0159\u00e1d zn\u011bla jako Depeche Mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kritika se neshodla, hitpar\u00e1dy byly p\u0159\u00edmo\u010da\u0159ej\u0161\u00ed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Condemnation vy\u0161la 13. z\u00e1\u0159\u00ed 1993 jako t\u0159et\u00ed singl z alba. Recenzenti na ni nereagovali jednotn\u011b. Smash Hits dal skladb\u011b \u010dty\u0159i body z p\u011bti a podotkl, \u017ee gospel od Depeche Mode asi \u010dekal m\u00e1lokdo, v\u00fdsledek ale podle nich fungoval. Andrew Harrison ze Select to sly\u0161el jinak a p\u00edse\u0148 ozna\u010dil za slab\u0161\u00ed m\u00edsto cel\u00e9 desky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Poslucha\u010di byli vst\u0159\u00edcn\u011bj\u0161\u00ed. V britsk\u00e9m \u017eeb\u0159\u00ed\u010dku se Condemnation dostala na 9. m\u00edsto, ve \u0160v\u00e9dsku vystoupala na 3. p\u0159\u00ed\u010dku a v Portugalsku se dostala a\u017e na vrchol hitpar\u00e1dy. Videoklip nato\u010dil Anton Corbijn, dlouholet\u00fd spolupracovn\u00edk kapely, jeho\u017e vizu\u00e1ln\u00ed rukopis u\u017e tehdy k Depeche Mode pat\u0159il skoro automaticky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Na Devotional Tour, kter\u00e9 doprov\u00e1zelo album Songs of Faith and Devotion, pat\u0159ila Condemnation k v\u00fdrazn\u00fdm koncertn\u00edm moment\u016fm. Gahan ji na p\u00f3diu zp\u00edval s nal\u00e9havost\u00ed, kter\u00e1 dok\u00e1zala p\u0159ekvapit i fanou\u0161ky zvykl\u00e9 na temn\u011bj\u0161\u00ed elektronickou polohu kapely. Depeche Mode se t\u00edm dostali mezi pouhou \u0161estici britsk\u00fdch kapel, kter\u00fdm se takov\u00fd v\u00fdsledek povedl. AllMusic ji popsal jako p\u0159esv\u011bd\u010div\u00e9 a v\u00e1\u0161niv\u00e9 pod\u00e1n\u00ed, v n\u011bm\u017e se Depeche Mode znovu prom\u011bnili, ani\u017e by p\u0159i\u0161li o vlastn\u00ed identitu. U kapely s tak rozpoznateln\u00fdm rukopisem to nebyla mal\u00e1 v\u011bc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A pak je tu po\u0159\u00e1d ten madridsk\u00fd sklep. Gahan v betonov\u00e9 m\u00edstnosti, kolem chlad, hlas vracej\u00edc\u00ed se od st\u011bn a po posledn\u00edm dozvuku chv\u00edle, kdy v re\u017eii nikdo nic ne\u0159\u00edk\u00e1.
